Local Coffee Shops - Due Jan 30

Happy Monday! Your first blog post is about one of my favorite things on the planet...coffee! This week you are charged with the task of finding and visiting a local, non-chain coffee shop in Knoxville. You don't necessarily need to buy anything, that's not the point of your visit, but carpool with some friends, take something to study, and spend a little time at this location. Also, I would challenge you to pick a coffee shop that you've never been to - the weirder, the better.

Your blog entry should discuss the following:

1. Why did you choose this coffee shop?
2. What is the environment like in this place? Is there anything unique that jumps out?
3. Would you go here again?

Friendly reminder: each blog post should be 250-words and you must also RESPOND to one classmate's post each week by Sunday at 5:00pm.

  1. In our Scruffy Little City, there are many places that provide a lot of character. Something easily found in Knoxville are the abundance of new coffee shops. On this snowy day, I decided to take a visit to one of the Knoxville famous coffee shops. I decided to go check out Kbrew. A recently popular Coffee Shop located on N. Broadway and Gay street. The Kbrew on N. Broadway has very unique drinks and special holiday drinks I thoroughly enjoy. I ordered the Cinnamon Sugar latte which uses Cruze Farm's milk. The atmosphere as you walk in is very welcoming and homey. It makes you want to stay a while, sit back, and relax. Something special about this coffee shop is the hammocks that are located outside. This is something that defines this coffee shop and will be something that will keep me, and other customers, coming back. I originally chose this coffee shop because I had seen so many people post about the hammocks on Instagram, so I wanted to check it out. The hammocks provide a unique atmosphere that allows for easy conversation or relaxation. The environment in this coffee shop has two main areas. The inside of the coffee shop tends to be where people gather to do work and the outside, where the hammocks are, tends to have more of a socialization aspect to it. I really enjoyed sipping on my latte, turning my phone off, and just hanging out in the hammock. It was a great time to unwind after this week and just think about all Knoxville has to offer. I am thankful Knoxville has coffee shops that are unique like Kbrew. I can't wait to go back and visit!! :)

    1. So bummed that I did not go to KBrew! I didn't know about the hammocks, but I saw Katie's birthday post on Facebook and was instantly jealous. Sounds like a good time. Next on my checklist :)

  2. Okay so I tried to go a bit off the beaten path and try something new (for me), and I found the most wonderful little nugget in the universe! I spent my Saturday morning doing homework for my Social Work classes while at The Empty Cup Coffeehouse. Those two things actually have a lot in common because The Empty Cup is a non-profit organization that works to support adoption efforts for families that cannot afford it! This is truly the reason why I chose to come all the way out to Cedar Bluff from South Knoxville just for a dang cup of coffee.
Everything about this place is so different from any coffee house I have ever been to. It is located in a building that used to be a bank, so it has a very spacious layout. The owner said that they took what used to be the vault of the bank and transformed it into a kids room so that parents could let their kids play while they grabbed coffee with their friends (something that supported their overall “family first” mission). It really is a huge place that is equipped with adult coloring books, art for sale (all proceeds go towards adoption efforts) and A CEREAL BAR!! It’s not as well-stocked as the Knoxville Pearl (R.I.P), but it’s nice to munch on some Captain Crunch knowing that you’re helping to give a child the opportunity to sit at a table with their new adopted family and do the same. I think I will DEFINITELY be returning.

    2. Jordan, I am definitely going to have to try this coffee house. I love cereal and the fact that they turned the Vault into a kids' play room is genius! Are the adult coloring books free to use?
